But life needn’t have to be like this, and by dedicating some of your valuable time towards entertainment, you can create a life more in balance with how humans evolved and ultimately prefer.

Why Your Brain Needs Play

You may have heard the saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” It was made famous by the 1980s film The Shining, but has its roots all the way back in the 17th century. In essence, it means that those who spend all their time working without adding a little excitement to their lives will become not only bored but also boring to those around them. Nobody wants that, and as creatures that value playtime, it is utterly critical to add time whenever possible to spice up one’s life. The point is that the brain needs time to get away from the things that increase cortisol levels and allow the mind to decompress. If you prefer some alone time once in a while, you need to mention your preferences to your family in a way they’ll understand and use your alone time productively. But the key is to have a think about what will make you happy and endeavour to make time for it in a way that won’t interfere with any existing obligations.

  • Knowing when to mix things up is important, especially when activities become stale. You don’t have to stick with an activity just because you think it’s fun; you’re allowed to make changes.

Knowing how to stratify your life effectively into parts where work is necessary, parts where you must focus on family life, and parts that are purely dedicated to yourself is essential if you want to live a full and enjoyable life. It’s not always easy, particularly for those who struggle to switch off, but once you’re able to do so, you will discover an entirely new outlook on life.
